Welcome to the World of The Bear Kings!
Escape to the world of The Bear Kings and discover a mystical world filled with animal kings, wicked trolls, and mysterious power. The world that Saedis, Ash, and Sola inhabit is one where our world came about in a different way and is tied to a sister world of magic.
The first two books complete one story. The later books will advance the timeline of the world, but will each be a separate story featuring many of the same characters.
Book Three, Right of Winter, is available now!
Welcome! On this page you can find the books in order. The entries toward the very bottom include my rough timeline for the next upcoming books in the series.
As mentioned above, East of the Sun and West of the Moon together form one complete story. Later books will be relatively standalone, featuring many of the same characters with their own story arcs. These books will still advance the overall storyline of The Bear Kings, but it won’t be necessary to read them in order (though you’ll probably enjoy them more if you do).
Thanks for visiting the site!

East of the Sun
A curse from long ago. An ancient lineage of kings. And three teenagers who are about to find out that fairy tales are more than just stories…
Saedis and Sola grew up in the shadow of the White Mountain, surrounded by tales of magical animals and wicked trolls. Saedis never once thought they were real–until a beast out of legend took her younger sister…
Ash wants nothing more than to be a storyteller, living a life of adventure like the heroes in his tales. Unfortunately, what he’s got are no prospects, a bad reputation, and no direction. Until he meets a girl who tells him the stories are real…
East of the Sun is book one in the saga of the Bear Kings, an epic fairy tale adventure set in a world based on Norwegian folklore.

West of the Moon
A curse from long ago. An ancient lineage of kings. And three teenagers who find out that being trapped in a fairy tale is anything but delightful…
Everything Saedis has done has been to try to find and help her younger sister, Sola—but absolutely everything has gone wrong. The poison in her wound has become deadly, and a troll witch is after Sola. Now, captured by a powerful troll lord and tasked with a lethal mission, Saedis will be forced to face her biggest questions—and her biggest fears…
Sola has escaped the Winter Palace, but she can still feel the chains around her—chains she forged when she gave her oath to the white bear. The curse has trapped him, and she’d love to leave him to it. But there’s a catch. If she can’t find him and free him, Sola will never be free to leave the bright lands herself…
Ash thought that living a story would be fun. That was before he was trapped in a treacherous underground world filled with darkness and danger. With a massive city of trolls looming, and Death’s Gate between him and the way out, Ash will need to draw on all of his ingenuity to become the hero he yearns to be—or die trying.
West of the Moon is book two in the Saga of the Bear Kings, an epic YA fairy tale adventure set in a world based on Norwegian folklore. It concludes the story begun in East of the Sun.

Right of Winter
Ash never wanted to be a bear king.
He never wanted to be in charge of anyone, or of anything—until his friend Valemon lay dying, and Ash promised that he would check on the old bear’s home, the Winter Palace, and try to restore it.
But when Ash enters the bears’ valley with his wife, his newborn son, and a camp of refugee humans in tow, it seems his promise to the bear king is about to get a lot more complicated. Heart-rending sounds float on the wind, and a desolate, unstable magic has invaded the whole of the between-place.
It seems that the Winter Palace hides its own secrets, and its own agenda. Worse, there are others already present in the castle—mysterious entities who would rather not see Ash restore the palace and take his place as the newest of the bear kings.
They’d rather see him dead…
Right of Winter is a standalone story in the saga of the Bear Kings, a YA fantasy adventure series set in a world based on Norwegian folklore.

North of the Wind – Coming 2026
The image here, of course, is a placeholder–I’ll have a real cover to show you as we get closer!
North was originally set to be Book Three, but then I realized I needed to write about what everyone else was doing in the meantime…so now it’s Book Five. These things, they happen sometimes when you’re a writer!
Tor doesn’t want anything to do with magic. Unfortunately, it’s not content to leave him alone…
When Tor’s sister Sola approaches him to go with her into the north, he’s not thrilled with the idea. She wants to find out what happened to their older brother, Will. But years ago, Will tried to kill Tor…
The last time she saw him, Sola’s friend Diamond said five words to her: You could have saved me. She’s never forgotten, and a trip north to find her lost brother seems a handy excuse to do what she’s wanted to all along: find a way to free Diamond from his ties to the cruel and powerful North Wind…
But the wind has threatened Sola, and Tor still hasn’t come to terms with what his family has become. Stuck in an icy wilderness with very little magic and few allies, the siblings become entangled in the doings of the white bears and the ancient, dangerous Wolf King. The frozen north might demand a terrible price from the grandchildren of King Valemon…
North of the Wind is a standalone novel in the saga of The Bear Kings, set ten years after the events of West of the Moon.
